News at 13 August 2007. The folks at Plumbwarehouse have slashed Stuart Turner pump prices to incredible levels. It looks like no one anywhere will match those deadly prices. Stuart Turner is a Rolls Royce name in pumps. They are known to be some of finest along with Watermill and Salamander.

As when buying anything, read the Terms and Conditions carefully, especially parts about returns, re-stocking fees. Be careful when signing for goods. Generally all faults must be reported within 24 hours when they are due to transit damage or obvious manhandling (eg dents).

Are just bathroom prices fixed?

There are dozens of examples of price control and price fixing to protect larger retail outlets. Currently, several major supermarkets are under investigation. The broadsheets are full of new reports as of 20th August, 2007, of emails being examined to uncover illegal practices.

"The commission has discovered recent emails in which representatives of Tesco and Asda are said to have demanded "retrospective rebates" and warned suppliers they would have their goods taken off the shelves if they failed to comply. The emails, understood to relate to fresh food suppliers, were sent as the retailers plotted to cut prices by more than 500,000,000 pounds."

A parallel method is to threaten to stop selling a supplier's goods unless smaller retailers are disconnected from the supply chain. This is common practice. It all means that prices are not subjected to market conditions but controlled by executives of larger retailers. This control will often mean smaller companies cannot succeed, and prices are higher to the customers.

I started this site looking at bathrooms only. I am now widening the site's interests but still the focus is on consumer affairs.

I decided this after seeing discrimination by a local estate agents when I attempted to a buy a house using a mortgage. The company actually refused to provide sales details as I was not a cash buyer. That is illegal, as it gives the seller less chance to get the desired price.

I will be writing an article about how estate agents discrimination shortly.
