Bathroom Lighting
Bathroom Zones

A bathrooms is divided up into zones which are numbered 0 to 3. These zones reflect the safety of the area relative to lighting. I saw an interesting article about bathroom lighting and also this article is interesting.

  • Zone 0 - This zone has direct water contact to the light. IP68 is needed. For example, if you have a sauna, steam room, you need IP68 rated lights.
  • Zone 1 - These are lights which have water contact in a shower, they have to be jetproof. They have to be IP65 rated.
  • Zone 2 - Lights which may have some splashes of water, they are within 0.6 meter of a basin. They are IP44 rated.
  • Zone 3 - No water contact. Lights fitted in area in which there is no water contact.
Types of Lights

The IP rating determines the quality of the light for the bathroom in terms of waterproofing. IP44 is the commonest light fitting sold in bathroom sales.

Some common types of lights are shown below:

  • Downlights - these are lights set into the ceiling
  • Spot Lights - lights mounted on bar and they are moveable
  • Wire Lights - lights connected to a wire which crosses the ceiling. The wire carries a low voltage.
